Why the Getting Ready Part of Your Wedding Day Matters (and How to Make It Feel Good)

The getting ready part of the wedding day is one of my favorite parts to photograph. It’s easy to overlook, but there’s so much happening in those hours before the ceremony. It’s usually a mix of quiet moments, nerves, excitement, and a little chaos, and that combination makes the photos feel really honest.

A few small choices can make this part of the day feel more intentional and help everything flow better, both in real life and in photos.

Consider Spending the Morning Together

If you’re not set on waiting until the ceremony to see each other, spending time together that morning can be really special. Going for a walk, grabbing coffee, making breakfast, or just hanging out at home can help take the edge off and ground you before the day really gets going. Some couples even get ready together. There’s no right or wrong here, just whatever feels the most like you.

Choose a Space That Feels Calm

Where you get ready really does affect the energy of the day. A cramped, dark hotel room full of bags and people can add stress without you even realizing it.

If you can, choose a space with good natural light, some breathing room, and a calmer feel. It doesn’t have to be fancy. A clean room, a window, and a little space to move around makes a huge difference and helps everything feel more relaxed.

Have Your Details Set Aside

Before the day starts, gather any details you want photographed and put them in one spot. Things like your rings, invitation suite, vow books, perfume, jewelry, shoes, or any sentimental pieces. This helps me jump right in when I arrive and keeps things from getting scattered. If you have a nice hanger for your dress, that’s always helpful too.

Create One “Clean” Area

Clutter is kind of unavoidable while getting ready, and that’s totally normal. If you can keep just one area near a window clear, it goes a long way. I’ll help move things around when needed, but having one clean zone makes it easier to focus on moments instead of what’s happening in the background.

Let the Natural Light Do Its Thing

Natural light is always best, especially during getting ready photos. Try to stay close to windows and turn off overhead lights when possible so skin tones stay soft and natural. And if you forget, don’t worry. I’ll take care of it when I get there.

Final Thoughts
The getting ready part of the day sets the tone for everything that follows. When it feels calm, intentional, and true to you, it shows. The photos end up feeling more relaxed, more emotional, and more like real life, which is always the goal.
